To close the 2009-2010 season, guest conductor Diane Wittry will lead an upbeat concert that dances down memory lane. Gershwin fans will savour Girl Crazy Overture and hum along to “Our Love is Here to Stay.” The prolific team of tunesmith John Kander and lyricist Fred Ebb (Cabaret, Chicago, Kiss of the Spider Woman) will be heard in a dazzling arrangement of New York, New York. Everyone will be “In the Mood” as soon as the first bar of the Tommy Dorsey favourite spills out into the Sean O’Sullivan Theatre. The syncopation-rich “It Don’t Mean a Thing if it Ain’t Got That Swing” will immediately set all toes a tappin’. Calm will return via Cole Porter’s “Miss Ottis Regrets,” only to have the heat turned way, way up as the hypnotic drums and soaring solo clarinet of “Sing, Sing, Sing” work their legendary magic—Niagara style!
