Santa makes an early appearance in this wideranging program. Rumour has it that Jolly Old St. Nick may grab a baton and demonstrate music-making North-pole style. Elves on both sides of the footlights will be treated to their Yuletide favourites (from Tchaikovsky’s fleeting “Trepak” through Hershey Kay’s arrangement of “Deck the Halls” to a covey of carols: “Hark the Herald Angels Sing,” The First Noël,” “Angels We Have Heard on High,” and “Silent Night”). Including such works as Festive Sounds of Hannukah, and “Mele Kalikimaka” (Christmas in Hawaii) further broadens the appeal of this global celebration. “Yes, Virginia There Is a Santa Claus” will both be heard and seen on guest conductor Timothy Hankewich’s entertaining array of seasonal delights.
