A Winter’s Oasis
DIANE WITTRY
Conductor
DOUG MILLER
NSA Principal Flute
Sunday, January 24, 2010 2:30pm
1:45pm. Pre-concert talk
Those already tiring of winter’s blast will savour the musical banquet that comprises guest conductor Diane Wittry’s musical feast. Selections from Handel’s Water Music Suite will engage the ear and inspire the soul. The six movements of John Rutter’s Suite Antique, show the prolific composer’s skill in making something old very new again. Using the same instrumentation as Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 (not coincidentally performed on the same program as the 1979 première) the movements range stylistically from a “Bach-like aria to a Richard Rodgers-style waltz.’ NS principal flute, Doug Miller will be the featured performer. This concert then abruptly switches gears. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A Major is arguably his most energetic work in that form. Even the “slow” movement is marked “Allegretto.” Frequently described as the “Symphony of the Dance” its sheer unstoppable momentum (once the magnificently structured introduction is magically morphed into the first theme) is not for the weak of heart on both sides of the footlights. Any thoughts of wintry doldrums are sure to be banished and hope renewed.
