Hot Cross Buns - English Style!

JOHN MORRIS RUSSELL
Conductor
CHRISTIE GOODWIN
NSA Principal Oboe

Sunday, November 29, 2009 2:30pm
1:45pm. Pre-concert talk

Guest conductor John Morris Russell (currently music director of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra) has built a whopper of a program around the perennially sunny key of D Major. The symphony rich menu begins with a
spritely opus from Londonborn William Boyce. Jumping ahead two centuries, Christie Goodwin (NS principal oboe) is soloist in Vaughan Williams’ Oboe Concerto, the 1944 première of which had to be relocated from London to Liverpool due to the menacing threat of German rocket attacks. Johann Christian Bach lived out much of his life in the British capital. His delightfully radiant Sinfonia is an important contribution to the development of the Classical style. The program concludes with “Papa” Haydn’s last symphony (“London”). What fun that the finale’s theme can be traced back to a tune used by street hawkers to sell their “hot cross buns.”

Boyce - Sinfonia No. 5
V.Williams - Oboe Concerto, Christie Goodwin, oboe
J.C. Bach - Sinfonia in D, op. 18, No. 4
*Carrabré - Chase the Sun
Haydn - Symphony No. 104 “London”
