Sensational Celebrations
TIMOTHY HANKEWICH
Conductor
XIAOLING LI
NSA Associate Concertmaster
Sunday, October 4, 2009 2:30pm
1:45pm. Pre-concert talk
The 62nd season lifts off with guest conductor Timothy Hankewich on the podium. The Cedar Rapids Symphony’s maestro will lead a carefully chosen program that appeals to every musical taste. The first reading of the set piece Chase the Sun (composer T. Patrick *Carrabré envisioned this brief soundscape while commuting to work in Manitoba) is an apt metaphor for this year’s conductors as they set their sights on a permanent position in Niagara. Malcolm Forsyth’s 1996 Siyajabula We Rejoice! more than lives up to its title. Violinist Xiaoling Li brings her special talents to Mozart’s eternally sunny Concerto No. 4. The concert concludes with Tchaikovsky’s brooding, emotionally-charged F Minor Symphony where all sections of the orchestra have a chance to shine in this mighty score.
*Carrabré - Chase the Sun
Forsyth - Siyajabula! We Rejoice!
Mozart - Concerto No. 4 in D Major, K.218
Tchaikovsky - Symphony No. 4
* This composition will be conducted by all four conductors as a means to comparing “apples to apples” as part of the ongoing music director selection process.
